The earliest information about our branch of the Sanders' family comes from a letter written by Henry B. Sanders brother to our grandmother Sarah Ellen Sanders. The letter reads as follows:

This is the life of William C. Sanders as best as I can give it. He was bornd in old North Carolina bornd Dec. 1 1818. com to Indiana when about 12 years old. William C. Sanders and one brother Francis and one Sister Polla are settled down near Bedford Larnce Co. Indiana. Father and Mother was married near Bedford Ind July 30, 1840 and moved on afarm near old Mouting Springs in the North East part of Matin Co an he had at that time an old tramp mill the only way they had at that time to grind corn to make meal to make bread and then started a dry good store by ---some of the older boys ---- Was lots of help on the ----he farmed and run the store--bywite a while and then he sold out and moved to Davis Co. 1861 about 7 1/2 miles North West of Odon. At that time it was called Clarkburg and stade thair 3 years and then moved back to near old MontenSprings. He made one crop thair Sold out and bout the land whear Indian Springs R.R. Station is now. Made one crop thair and trade that land for property in Dover Hill. At that time Dover Hill was the county seat of Martin Co. I thank we moved thar in fawl be for I was 9 the next April.

This is for Homer.

According to Helen G. Burchard R.R.#1 Box 299 Williams, IN 47470; phone 812-275-0552; Avery Sanders' death record says his father, William C. Sanders is born in Ohio and his mother Mary (Fisher) Sanders is born in Tenn. This conflicts with the information from Henry B. Sanders letter and I believe it is inaccurate.

According to Beulah Hamilin, grand daughter of Henry Sanders the boys worked for other families and gave the money to William. When the boys were married he gave each of them a team of horses and a buggy. The family was Baptist and they belonged to the old Union Church in Martin Co. At some time a church trial was held and William was removed from the church role. He didn't attend any church afterwards. It is alleged that the wife of Chris or Ezyra Holt invited William to see her new davenport. William suggested they try it out!

Polly Sanders, William's sister, is listed in the records of Vernal Baptist Church, Monroe County. She was accepted into membership by letter on July 8, 1843. The church is located 9 miles NW of Bloomington, IN It was founded in 1817 and was extinct in 1910. A typed copy of the church minutes, made in 1930, is found at Franklin College in the library. The church belonged to the Articles of Faith of the White River Baptist Church.

David Fisher is buried in the Old Union Cemetery in Indian Creek Co. Fayetteville, IN. The tombstone reads David Fisher B. May 15, 1803 D. Dec 8, 1862.

The following Sanders families were found in Indiana in the 1830 Census:

Sanders, Amos, Benjamin, Henry Jr., Henry Sr., Hugh, Jacob, Jacob, Jonathan, John, Joseph, John, Joseph, Nathan, Rebecca, Richard, Robert, Solomon, Thomas, Thomas Sr, William , William, Wright. (According to Henry B. Sanders' letter he was born in 1818 and came with his father William to Indiana when he was 12 years old. He would be 12 in 1830.)

Newspaper Article about the Death of Grant Sanders:

Headline: Hurled to Death

Grant Sanders Committed Suicide Wednesday Noon

Adopts Peculiar Method

Sanders takes middle of Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railroad Track and walks into rapid moving passenger train and hurled forty feet.

Grant Sanders, a farmer aged about forty-two and residing in southeast Halbert township was walking along the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern railroad rack near Raney's crossing at noon Wednesday and was struck by local passenger train no 7.

Grant Sanders in leaving home Wednesday his wife said that he was cursing and swore he would never return. He rode in Len Truebloods's wagon as far as Raney's crossing on the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern railroad and left Trueblood at that point and it was evident that he was fully determined to end his life. He took his day book and wrote a letter in it to Homer Sanders and said that there was no pleasure in life and that he was tired of living in hell and was going to end it. Further he made several requests as to the disposition of some personal effects and burial of his remains. In order that there might be no delay in the delivery of this letter he waited on the rural mail route and when mail carrier Charles Hall came along gave him the letter and requested him to see that it was delivered personally to Homer Sanders.

About noon Sanders struck the railroad track west of the Raney crossing and started east. No. 7, the local passenger which has a fast time schedule between stations was approaching him. The engineer sounded the alarm whistle and Sanders looked up at the rapidly approaching train. The engineer supposed the man would step from the track but Sanders lowered his head and steadily approached the train.

The engineer realizing that it was too late to stop and in order to throw the body from the track gave the engine full head of steam. The force of the blow was terrific, the body being doubled up and hurled between thirty and forty feet from the track and the force was so strong that it tore the shoes from his feet. His skull was crushed, neck broken, flesh reduced to pulp and every bone in the body broken. Death was instantaneous.

The train was brought to a standstill and backed up, a brakeman being left with the remains until the local freight, which was following close, when the remains were brought to the Baker & Gutheridge undertakers establishment and prepared for burial.

Sanders moved to Missouri several years ago since with his wife and child and while there both died. He returned here and six or seven years ago married Mrs. Julie E. Jones, a daughter of the late Eph Acre, but had never been right in his mind and his desperate act gives evidence that he was at least temporarily insane.

Coroner Morton Keller was notified and arrived in the city and after holding an investigation Wednesday night and yesterday morning returned a verdict of suicide.

Mrs. Sanders could not be found until last night and it was feared that there might be other features in the case as the report was received that the Sanders residence was closed up and no evidence of life about the place, but Mrs. Sanders arrived in the city and appeared before the Coroner Keller about nine o'clock. Mrs. Sanders stated that she would take charge of the remains and would inter them in the Acre graveyard south of the city.

The engineer of the train that killed Sanders voluntarily came to this city yesterday morning and appeared before Coroner Keller, but the matter had been cleared up and there could be no blame attached to him. The affair is regretted, but unavoidable and the man must to have been desperate to deliberately walk into certain death and the condition of the remains made the strongest hearts shudder and turn away from the sickening sight.

Early Sanders Family

The Saunders family of Bedford, VA is reportedly descended from the line of one Reverend Laurence Saunders, son of Thomas Saunders and Margaret Cave of Harrington, North Hamptonshire, England. Laurence was burned at the stake in 1555 in Coventry, England as a religious heretic. His wife and son fled to Holland where they were allowed to worship as they pleased.
